공간 사일삼은 2009년 문래동4가 41-3번지의 빈 공장을 공동 작업실로 사용하면서 시작되었다. 당시 빈 공장을 사용 가능한 작업 공간으로 정비하며 예기치 못하게 많은 힘을 들이게 되었고, 이 과정을 묶어 ‘문래동 공장과의 즐겁지만은 않은 네달간의 대화(2010)’를 열었다. 이를 시작으로 점차 공동 작업실인 동시에 입주 작가들을 포함한 주변 창작자들의 프로젝트가 가깝게 열리곤 하는 작가직영공간(artist run space)의 성격이 갖추어졌다.
작가직영공간(artist run space)의 성격이 형성된 과정은, 기존 미술계에 대한 새로운 대안을 상정하려는 시도를 앞에 놓는다거나 특정한 사회적 메세지를 내부적으로 구축하려는 고민이 의식적으로 탈구된 채 이루어졌다. 사일삼은 애초에 특별히 공간 기획자의 역할이 없는 상황에서 운영의 규모를 키우지 않음으로써 외부 기금에 의존하지 않고 스스로 가동될 수 있는 작은 단위의 시스템을 상상해왔다. 현재 사일삼은 창작자들에게 공간 사용료를 받지 않고, 반대로 어떤 서비스를 제공하지 않는 방식으로, 각자의 영역이 유지되며 공생하는 일종의 자가 발전적 시스템의 형태로 이동하고 있다.
2015년 부터 사일삼은 공간을 운영하기에 불충분한 현실적 제반들을 가볍게 이용해보고자, 공간을 사용하는 사용자와 운영자간의 물리적, 정신적인 노동력의 사용을 최소화하는 공간 사용 메뉴얼을 제작했다. 앞으로 공간 사일삼은 이 공간사용메뉴얼을 통해 사용자들과 접속할 것이며, 이로써 공간을 들러가는 사람들간에 부드러운 이동이 이루어지도록 한다.
SPACE Four One Three took place in 2009, by using an empty factory at 41-3 Munrae-dong 4-ga as a joint workshop. At that time, a lot of effort was unexpectedly put into place to renovate the empty factory as a useful workspace. The process was reorganized and exhibited as a “Four-month conversation with the Munrae-dong factory(2010)” Starting from this, the character of an artist-run space was gradually established as a collaborative studio, where projects of nearby creators, including tenant artists, are often held close.
The process of forming the character of artist-run space was consciously dislocated from the attempt to conceive a new alternative to the existing art world or to internally construct a specific social message. Initially, SPACE Four One Three had imagined a small unit system that could self-operate without relying on external funds, not increasing the scale of operations, especially, in the absence of a space planner. Currently, SPACE Four One Three is moving into the form of a self-developmental system in which each domain is maintained and coexisted in a way that does not receive space usage fees from creators and. on the contrary, does not provide any services.
Since 2015, SPACE Four One Three has created a space-use manual that minimizes the use of physical and mental labor between users and operators of the space: allowing, them to simply utilize the realistic elements that are insufficient to operate the space. Hereafter, SPACE Four One Three will assess with users through this manual and provide smooth movement between the visitors.
